Open a business bank account in Luxembourg: KYC documents, risk review and bank selection.
A Luxembourg bank can decline an account even when your company is properly incorporated. Before applying, explain who ultimately owns the company, where its money comes from, what it sells and which payments to expect. We assemble a consistent KYC file and identify suitable banks; approval remains the bank's decision. FSL prepares the file and introduces you to partner banks; account opening and banking services are the bank's decision and responsibility.

Opening a bank account in Luxembourg for a company or its director is a bank onboarding process in which the institution reviews a KYC file covering identity, source of funds, activity and substance. The decision to open the account belongs to the bank alone; the applicant's levers are a complete, coherent file and a suitable introduction.
A Luxembourg bank rejected your company: what should you fix before reapplying?
Sending the same documents to several banks rarely resolves a KYC inconsistency. Rebuild a clear chain from ultimate beneficial owners and documented source of funds to the company's purpose, expected counterparties, countries and payment flows. Each institution applies its own risk appetite and retains the opening decision.
What to check
- Explain the activity : Reconcile the business plan with contracts, suppliers, invoicing countries and estimated transactions.
- Explain control and funds : Trace intermediate holding companies to ultimate owners and provide supporting evidence of the capital source.
- Choose the account type : Distinguish capital-deposit, operational and payment accounts before targeting a provider.
Deliverable: a bank-ready KYC narrative, evidence gap list and suitable provider shortlist; no approval guarantee.
Key takeaway
- No Luxembourg rule reserves account opening to residents: a refusal reflects each bank's own risk policy.
- A complete KYC file and justified activity are decisive.
- Substance and source of funds are scrutinised by banks.
- Financial Services Luxembourg prepares and introduces; the opening decision is the bank's.

Can a non-resident open a bank account in Luxembourg?
Yes. No Luxembourg rule reserves account opening to residents. The constraint is commercial: the bank assesses risk, the coherence of the activity and the traceability of funds before accepting the relationship. A well-documented non-resident file can be assessed, but acceptance remains subject to the institution's risk evaluation.
Two profiles differ in practice. A non-resident opening an account for a Luxembourg company presents a corporate file: RCS extract, consolidated articles, register of beneficial owners, description of the activity. A non-resident opening a personal account presents a private file: identity, proof of address, source of wealth and the reason for the link to Luxembourg.
The reason weighs as much as the documents. A Luxembourg company whose directors, clients and suppliers are all abroad will have to explain what genuinely connects the activity to the Grand Duchy. This is where most non-resident files fail. It is handled upstream, by documenting substance in Luxembourg before approaching the bank. After a refusal, review the possible documentary or commercial reasons before submitting another application.
Business bank accounts in Luxembourg: what the bank asks for
A Luxembourg bank applies the identification and due-diligence obligations of the amended law of 12 November 2004 on the fight against money laundering and terrorist financing. It must identify the company and its beneficial owners, understand the activity and verify the source of funds. These checks are not negotiable and explain the length of onboarding.
A business file is built around four questions the bank must be able to answer on its own after reading it: who really controls the company, what does it sell and to whom, where does the money entering the account come from, and what flows are expected in volume, currency and counterparty country. A file that leaves one of these open comes back to the applicant.
The bar varies by sector. International trading, crypto-assets, multi-jurisdictional shareholding and companies without local staff trigger enhanced due diligence. An operating company with a resident director, a lease and employees affiliated to the CCSS presents a profile banks process quickly.
Luxembourg bank account refused: five questions to diagnose before reapplying
A rejection is not necessarily caused by one missing file. Review five separate dimensions: 1) identity and full chain of ultimate owners; 2) economic purpose of a Luxembourg presence; 3) business contracts and counterparty jurisdictions; 4) evidenced source of incoming funds; and 5) the banking services actually requested. List gaps and inconsistencies rather than submitting the same application elsewhere unchanged.
Illustrative case: a Luxembourg SARL held by a foreign corporation expects an initial shareholder transfer to fund a commercial contract. An RBE extract alone does not trace the entire natural-person ownership chain or demonstrate the origin of the transfer. Reconcile the ownership chart, financing decision, contract, relevant bank records and projected flows.
After a refusal, correct factual gaps and seek clarification on acceptable evidence; do not conceal a rejection or assume a different bank must approve the same file. Each institution makes its own risk-based decision. Official reference: Guichet.lu's share-capital deposit guidance explains bank KYC checks.
Source of funds versus source of wealth: evidence for Luxembourg corporate KYC
Source of funds means the origin and path of the money entering the account or financing a particular transaction: for instance, a share-sale agreement, loan contract, dividend decision and supporting payment trail. Source of wealth concerns how the ultimate beneficial owner accumulated wealth over time. The bank may seek both, and they cannot be replaced by a generic declaration.
For a capital contribution or shareholder loan, link the remitter, legal basis, economic source and relevant transaction records. For a holding, also explain the asset portfolio and expected dividends, investments or loan repayments. The precise documents requested depend on the institution and assessed risk.
Customer due diligence continues after opening: changes to beneficial owners, business activity or payment corridors can trigger additional requests. A kept-up-to-date file reduces inconsistencies but does not guarantee acceptance.
Depository bank or payment institution: choose by business function
Define the actual need first: recurring SEPA payments, foreign exchange, corporate cards, lending, initial share-capital deposit, international counterparties or holding-company cash. Then compare supported jurisdictions, ownership profiles, transaction limits, fees, credit facilities and the provider's regulated status. A payment account must not be assumed to provide every function of a bank deposit account.
For incorporation capital, confirm with the notary what certificate and type of institution are acceptable. A payment institution may suit recurring operations but does not necessarily provide lending or the same deposit services. No onboarding path guarantees acceptance for every international shareholding structure.
How long does it take to open a bank account in Luxembourg?
Allow three to eight weeks between filing a complete application and the account going live, depending on the bank and the risk profile. An incomplete file frequently exceeds three months, because every missing document restarts a cycle of exchanges that goes back to the end of the compliance queue.
Lead time is decided at submission, by the quality of the file handed over. We assemble the file in the format the targeted institution expects, with source-of-funds evidence already gathered and an activity note that answers the compliance team's questions before they are asked.
One case deserves separating: the capital deposit account, opened before incorporation to receive the share capital and issue the notary with the blocking certificate. It follows a shorter procedure than an operating account and is handled during company formation, without waiting for RCS registration.
Can you open a Luxembourg bank account online?
Partly. Document collection and signature are digital at most institutions, but remote identification is regulated and the majority of Luxembourg banks still require at least one video identification session or a physical meeting for corporate files and for non-residents.
Neobanks and payment institutions offer fully online journeys with short lead times. The trade-off is scope: limited payment instruments, no lending, and acceptance by third parties that is sometimes weaker than a deposit-bank IBAN for receiving share capital or dealing with an administration.
The choice follows actual use. A consulting company collecting SEPA payments works well with a payment institution. A holding that receives dividends, enters an intragroup loan or evidences substance to the tax authorities is better served by a Luxembourg deposit bank, including for the strength of the file in the event of an audit.

Frequently asked questions
A Luxembourg bank refused my company: should I apply elsewhere with the same documents?
First check UBO tracing, economic purpose, underlying contracts, source of incoming funds and expected flows. A second bank may assess risk differently but does not have to approve the application.
What is the difference between source of funds and source of wealth?
Source of funds documents a particular incoming transfer and its origin; source of wealth explains the wider accumulation of the beneficial owner's assets. Banks may require evidence of both.
Can a non-resident open a bank account in Luxembourg?
Yes, no Luxembourg rule reserves opening to residents. The bank decides on risk: coherence of the activity, traceability of funds and a genuine link to Luxembourg. A documented file succeeds, an incomplete one is refused.
How long does it take to open a business account?
Three to eight weeks for a complete file, depending on the bank and the risk profile. An incomplete file frequently exceeds three months. The capital deposit account, opened before incorporation, follows a shorter procedure.
Can a Luxembourg account be opened entirely online?
Rarely for a company or a non-resident: most deposit banks maintain a video or physical identification session. Payment institutions offer fully online journeys, with a narrower range of services.
Does FSL open the account for me?
No. We prepare the file and introduce your company to partner banks; opening the account is the bank's decision and responsibility.
Why can opening take time?
Banks apply strict KYC procedures: source of funds, activity, substance and beneficial owners. A well-prepared file significantly speeds up the process.
Is substance in Luxembourg needed?
Genuine substance (office, governance, activity) greatly facilitates opening and maintaining the account. We articulate it with your structure.
Do you support foreign companies?
Yes, including foreign companies wanting a Luxembourg account, subject to the bank's requirements.
